Nova, the humanoid teacher at Government LPGS, Punalur in Kollam district of Kerala, was introduced to an astonished group of students on November 14. Nova is powered by GPT-4o, a cutting-edge AI model, and is revolutionizing education for 74 lower primary students.
The AI teacher can converse in four languages—English, Malayalam, Hindi, and Arabic—helping students improve their communication skills while fostering curiosity. Headteacher M.K. Bindu shared, “We’ve uploaded all their textbooks in PDF format, allowing Nova to answer syllabus-related questions. The children are thrilled and ask random queries, which Nova patiently addresses.”
Nova's primary focus is language skills enhancement and sparking interest in technology. "By familiarizing children with AI, we are preparing them for a digital future," explained Amesh Lal, PTA president and the IT expert behind Nova’s design.
At Virakupurakotta Government School in Thiruvananthapuram, another robotic teacher named Poopy is enchanting students. Developed by RedFox Robotics, a startup incubated at Barton Hill Government Engineering College, Poopy was designed to make learning more interactive and fun.
Poopy speaks both English and Malayalam fluently, answering a barrage of student questions with ease. Biju E, a teacher, shared, “Students love interacting with Poopy. We also plan to use her to improve their communicative abilities.”
What sets Poopy apart is her adaptability to different learning styles. "She customizes lessons to suit each student’s syllabus and simplifies complex concepts," said Vimun A, CEO of RedFox Robotics. Poopy’s introduction was made possible through a corporate group’s CSR initiative, demonstrating how collaborative efforts can drive innovation in education.
Iris made history this year as India’s first humanoid robot introduced into the education system. Created by Makerlabs Edutech in partnership with KTCT Higher Secondary School in Thiruvananthapuram, Iris combines cutting-edge AI technology with a culturally familiar appearance, dressed in a traditional sari, to make learning more relatable and impactful.
Unveiled under the 2021 NITI Aayog Atal Tinkering Lab initiative, Iris is designed to deliver interactive, multilingual lessons tailored to individual student needs. Her mobility, enabled by wheels, adds an engaging, dynamic dimension to the classroom. As a trailblazer in the Indian educational landscape, Iris is setting the stage for a transformative learning experience rooted in both tradition and innovation.
