A woman doctor from Jammu and Kashmir was felicitated for donating blood more than 50 times in three decades. This certainly is a rare feat.
Kiran Sharma who works as a senior medical officer at Police Hospital, Jammu was given the rare honour by the Indian Society of Blood Transfusion and Immunohaematology (ISBTI) this month for her extraordinary contribution in the field of voluntary blood donation movement.
ISBTI was set up in 1972 after Indo-Pak war in 1971. It was established with the aim to encourage and motivate people to come forward and donate blood voluntarily in the country.
Ten people were selected for the award by the ISBTI out of which Sharma was the only women. Talking about her experience, Sharma stated that she always felt an inner solace on the 53 occasions that she had donated blood.
Sharma informed that she first donated blood as a student in 1987 and has been doing so ever since for the past 30 years. Born in Bhaderwah area of Doda district, Sharma received the award from ISBTI during its 42nd National Conference held at Kota in Rajasthan from Dec 8-10.
