Pune, the sprawling city in Maharashtra recently earned a feather in its cap as it beat metros like Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai in India’s rooftop solar power generation capacity.
According to data from Bridge to India, Pune generates 130 megawatts (MW) of solar energy, way ahead of Delhi which is in second place with 96 MW of solar energy.
Pune is one of the biggest industrial zones in India. There is a growing demand for rooftop solar panels by commercial and industrial buildings. Industries are charged with high electricity rates for electricity consumption than households. This pushes them to adopt cheaper sources of energy like solar energy to generate their own power. Compared to residential buildings, industrial buildings have a larger rooftop area facilitating the setting up of rooftop solar panels.
As fossil fuels are hazardous to the environment, people all over the world are taking steps to shift to renewable sources of energy like solar energy. The central government offers subsidies for installing solar panels on residential and institutional buildings. However, the growth in these segments has failed to reach the expectations. The country is still short of the 2022 target of 40GW from rooftop solar panels.
With awareness to use renewable sources of energy and heavy subsidies by the government, India can hope to see the expected increase in the generation of solar energy through rooftop solar panels.
