In a historic move, Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) has appointed Priya Nair as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD), marking a first in the company’s 90-year history. She is not just the new face of HUL’s leadership; she is the first woman ever to hold this powerful position. Taking charge from August 1, 2025, she will succeed Rohit Jawa.
A Strong Educational Foundation
Priya’s journey started with a deep focus on education and personal growth. She earned her Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) in Accounts and Statistics from Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai, between 1987 and 1992. Determined to build a career in business, she went on to pursue an MBA in Marketing from the Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Pune (1992–1994). Her thirst for knowledge didn’t stop there. She also completed an executive program in Business Administration and Management at the world-renowned Harvard Business School. This strong academic foundation helped shape her strategic thinking and marketing brilliance skills she would later bring into the world of FMCG at HUL.
30 Years of Growth & Grace at HUL
In 1995, Priya Nair joined Hindustan Unilever, fresh out of B-school, full of ambition and a willingness to learn. Over the years, she climbed steadily through the ranks not through shortcuts or privileges but through consistent performance, deep understanding of the Indian market, and an unwavering belief in brand-building.
Career Journey of a Global Leader at HUL
Her remarkable journey at Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) reflects a steady rise through impactful leadership and strategic innovation. From 1995 to 2012, she built a strong foundation in various sales and marketing roles across the Home Care and Beauty & Personal Care segments. In 2012, she joined the HUL Management Board as the head of Beauty & Personal Care, marking her entry into senior leadership.
Two years later, in 2014, she was appointed Executive Director for South Asia, where she led the Home Care division. Her influence expanded further in 2021 when she became Executive Director & EVP South Asia for Beauty & Personal Care. In 2022, she was elevated to the role of Global Chief Marketing Officer for Beauty & Wellbeing at Unilever. Most recently, in 2024, she assumed the role of Business Group President, taking charge of a €12 billion global portfolio. At every stage, she seamlessly integrated local insights with global strategies, helping build iconic brands and drive sustainable growth for both HUL and Unilever.
Building Brands that Speak to Every Home
One of Priya Nair’s biggest strengths has been her ability to understand the Indian consumer. From launching effective hygiene campaigns to revamping product lines to suit modern Indian households, she has had a hand in transforming underperforming businesses into household favorites. As Head of Home Care, she led a major business turnaround, repositioning the portfolio for sustainability and future readiness. Her marketing innovations and digital transformation initiatives made her one of the most respected minds in FMCG branding.
A Leader Beyond the Boardroom
Priya Nair isn’t just a corporate success story; she’s also a role model for women across India. Over the years, she has been consistently listed among the most influential women in Indian business. But what makes her leadership even more powerful is her commitment to mentorship and industry collaboration. She has served as an Independent Director on a publicly listed Indian company, a board member at ASCI (Advertising Standards Council of India), and has been part of government partnerships and industry forums like MMA India.
Despite her global roles, she’s always remained grounded, often speaking about the power of authenticity and purpose-driven work. Behind every successful professional is a strong personal story. Her ability to juggle global responsibilities while being deeply connected to her Indian roots adds to the richness of her leadership style. For young professionals, especially women, her story is proof that you don’t need to choose between career and family—you can do both with excellence.
More Than a Milestone
Priya Nair’s appointment is not just a promotion. It’s a symbol of change, a celebration of women in leadership. In a country where boardrooms are still largely male-dominated, her rise sends a message loud and clear: the future of leadership is equal, inclusive, and deeply human. As she steps into her new role, Priya carries with her the hopes of a generation and the wisdom of three decades.
