India’s para-athletes have given the nation a reason to celebrate, returning from the Asian Para Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, with an unprecedented 114 medals. President Droupadi Murmu congratulated the contingent on its remarkable achievement, praising the athletes’ hard work, perseverance and self-belief.
In her message on X, the President said the record-breaking performance would inspire young people to dream big, work with dedication and face challenges with a positive attitude. She also extended her heartfelt congratulations to the entire Indian contingent.
India finished the continental sporting event with 30 gold, 35 silver and 49 bronze medals, taking its total to 114.
The tally surpassed the country’s previous record of 111 medals at the 2023 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China. India had won 29 gold, 31 silver and 51 bronze medals at that edition.
This time, the contingent bettered its overall medal count as well as its gold and silver tallies, delivering an impressive performance across disciplines.
Every medal represents hours of training, personal sacrifice and the determination to overcome challenges. Together, the achievements underline the growing presence of Indian para-athletes on the international stage.
Adding another proud moment to the campaign, Mona Agarwal and Nishad Kumar were selected as India’s flag-bearers for the closing ceremony.
Both athletes enjoyed outstanding outings, winning two gold medals each. Mona made her mark in shooting with a record-breaking performance, while Nishad excelled in para-athletics, winning gold in the high jump and long jump.
Their selection recognised their achievements and placed two of the contingent’s standout performers at the forefront of the closing celebrations.
India’s record haul is a celebration not just of sporting excellence but also of resilience, dedication and the power of self-belief. The athletes’ performances offer an inspiring reminder that challenges need not define a person’s limits.
As President Murmu noted, their success can encourage young people to pursue ambitious goals and remain undaunted by obstacles. With 114 medals setting a new benchmark, India’s para-athletes have raised the bar for future campaigns and given the country plenty to cheer about.
