Portugal has accomplished an incredible feat by relying entirely on renewable energy sources to power the nation for an impressive six consecutive days, resulting in nearly zero consumer electric bills.
According to reports, Portugal's largest energy company, Redes Energéticas Nacionais, confirmed that wind and wave conditions were responsible for generating the nation's entire energy supply. Initially predicted to last only a day, these favorable conditions persisted for a remarkable six days, with Portugal even exporting renewable electricity to Spain during certain periods.
The achievement encompassed a total of 149 hours of continuous renewable energy generation, with 95 hours dedicated to exporting excess power to neighboring Spain. This remarkable run broke the previous record for consecutive days of 100% renewable energy use.
Interestingly, the record-breaking achievement was made possible primarily by rainy and windy weather rather than solar power. The presence of wind turbines, many of which were installed in the 1990s when solar panels were less cost-effective, played a significant role. Additionally, Portugal has invested in numerous hydroelectric dams since the 1970s, further bolstering its renewable energy capacity.
Looking ahead, experts in the energy sector anticipate the development of deepwater offshore wind farms as the country continues to expand its renewable energy infrastructure.
Portugal's remarkable accomplishment in running on 100% renewables for an extended period highlights its commitment to sustainability and serves as an inspiration for other nations striving for energy independence and a greener future.
