Oxford Dictionaries announced ‘Aadhaar’ as the Hindi Word of the Year for 2017 at Jaipur Literature Festival on Saturday. It is also the first Oxford Dictionaries Hindi Word of the Year. Aadhaar was selected over many other shortlisted words like Notebandi, Swachh, Vikaas, Yoga and Bahubbali that reflected the social, cultural, political and economic trends and events of 2017.
The word ‘Aadhaar’ acquired great significance in 2017 with the move to link bank accounts and phone numbers with Aadhaar resulting in debates about the merits and risks of the programme. ‘Aadhaar’ was chosen as the Hindi Word of the Year as it had become the focus of conversations throughout the country.
