Solving the problem of open defecation, the state has taken a good step. Maharashtra’s highways may soon get state-of-the-art toilets every 25km. Usually while travelling, citizens feels the need of toilets but have to halt at some restaurants due to unavailability of good public toilets.
Now, the public works department (PWD) will soon identify 300 spots to construct modern toilets with the help of oil companies that have their petrol pumps at these spots. The work on construction of 37 toilets will start immediately after the monsoon.
The companies will have to maintain the toilets as per international standards and dispose of human waste scientifically for the next 33 years.
As per the report published in Hindustan Time, an official from PWD said, “The land along the state highways is usually owned by the PWD. We are identifying spots along the highways where petrol pumps can come up. We will make it mandatory for the oil companies to build state-of-the-art toilets. We had a series of meetings with the companies.”
The scheme has been initiated under the Swachcha Maharashtra mission.
