Maharashtra became the first state in the country to ban the sale of tobacco products and consumer goods under the same roof. Last September, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had proposed this move to prevent the exposure of children to tobacco products.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner Pallavi Darade said that children could get influenced by tobacco products when they go to buy chips or chocolates. The Union government had suggested that tobacco be sold exclusive of FMCG products. The FDA issued an order to this effect on January 9.
