On this International Women’s Day, the rhythmic hum of the Vande Bharat Express carried more than just passengers—it carried a powerful message of empowerment. For the first time ever, Central Railways turned the spotlight on its incredible women workforce by running Train No. 22223, from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Sainagar Shirdi, with an all-women crew. From the determined loco pilot at the helm to the meticulous train managers, vigilant ticket examiners, and warm, welcoming hostesses, every role was filled by women rewriting history on the rails.
This wasn’t just another train journey—it was a moving tribute to resilience, breaking barriers in a profession long dominated by men.
Speaking on this pioneering effort, Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railways, emphasized that Indian Railways has continually strived to make workspaces more inclusive for women. He also noted that a similar initiative was taken for goods trains and expressed hope that more Vande Bharat Express trains would follow suit.
Taking to social media, Central Railways proudly called this move a “historic moment” that highlights the strength, dedication, and leadership of women in Indian Railways. The social media post celebrating the occasion read:
"HISTORIC MOMENT! For the first time ever, a Vande Bharat Express is being fully operated by an all-women crew, departing from CSMT on this #InternationalWomensDay! A proud moment celebrating the strength, dedication, and leadership of women in Indian Railways!"
As the Vande Bharat Express passed through Matunga station—India’s first all-women-managed railway station—it created a moment of pure pride. The women at the station exchanged signals with the train manager on board, a small but powerful gesture of support and celebration. It was more than just a routine exchange—it was a symbol of how women are shaping the future of Indian Railways together.
The celebrations didn’t stop there. On the same day, a special goods train, fully operated by women, set off on its journey. Loco Pilot Ms. Sangeeta Sarkar, Assistant Loco Pilot Ms. Tejaswi Walke, and Train Manager Ms. Rohini Jadhav skillfully steered a 43-wagon train carrying 1,150 tons of cargo. It was a clear message that women are capable of leading in every part of the railway system, whether in high-speed passenger trains or heavy-duty freight operations.
Recognizing the relentless spirit and contributions of women, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to ‘Nari Shakti’ on International Women’s Day. In a special gesture, he announced that his social media platforms would be taken over by women achievers from various fields to showcase their inspiring journeys.
"We bow to our Nari Shakti on #WomensDay! Our Government has always worked for empowering women, reflecting in our schemes and programs," the Prime Minister posted.
The celebration of women’s contributions was not limited to Mumbai but extended to other divisions of the Central Railways, including Nagpur, Bhusawal, Pune, and Solapur.
This historic step by Indian Railways serves as a symbol of empowerment, proving that the tracks of progress are open to all. By giving women the wheel—quite literally—this initiative not only celebrates their capabilities but also paves the way for a more inclusive future in railway operations.
As the Vande Bharat Express sped towards its destination with an all-women crew, it carried more than just passengers—it carried a message of strength, equality, and boundless possibilities for the future.
