Naya Ellis has already had a lasting impact on science and technology at the young age of 14. In addition to garnering her widespread fame, her ground-breaking creation, the WingItt watch—a device that detects strokes—has the potential to transform healthcare for a vast number of people.
A Passion Called Upon One's Own Experience ~
Naya was inspired to become an inventor for a very personal reason. Having personally witnessed her mother's health issues, she became passionate about changing things. In her first year at New Orleans' John F. Kennedy High School, she focused her scientific interest on practical fixes. Motivated by her grandmother's struggle with a stroke and equipped with her knowledge from STEM ( STEM is an acronym that stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), Naya set out to develop a tool that can identify strokes at an early stage and possibly save lives.

Naya was initially interested in seizure detection, but her grandmother's medical background finally led her to focus on stroke detection. WingItt, a watch that uses cutting-edge technology to monitor nerve impulses and heartbeats to successfully identify early signs of stroke, is the product of her passion and inventiveness. Knowing that persons over 55 have a higher risk of stroke, Naya created WingItt with this fact in mind. Her ultimate objective is to enable everyone to use the gadget, regardless of age or socioeconomic background. She wants to democratize access to life-saving medical technologies by putting cost first.

Naya believes that innovation is about having a significant effect rather than just coming up with something new. Her relentless dedication to tackling real-world health concerns is indicative of her goal to use her ideas to benefit the world. Giving back has an impact that extends well beyond the people we directly assist, especially at times when we feel like we have nothing left to offer. We convince ourselves and others that we will be taken care of and that we will be rewarded for our kindness since we are living from an abundant mindset. We are thankful for the life we have and in a position to help others who are less fortunate, rather than worrying about what's in it for us. Even little actions have the power to make a difference and inspire kindness, forgiveness, and a willingness to lend a helping hand to others.
Naya's popularity is still rising after winning the National STEM Challenge. At the esteemed National STEM Challenge event in Washington, D.C., she will present WingItt as one of the over 2,500 kids honored for their inventiveness. This platform not only acknowledges her accomplishments but also provides access to possibilities in STEM in the future.
Along with moving forward with WingItt, Ellis aims to pursue a career in medicine and become an obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) once she graduates from high school. “I love the fact that you’re bringing new life into the world, that’s the coolest thing ever to me,” Ellis shared with The74. “I’m a woman helping women. It can’t get any better than that!”
Takeaway From This Success Story ~
How to Contribute To Making a Positive Impact ~ Making the world a better place might appear daunting on a grand scale. Even while it might not be possible for one individual to completely alter the world, you can positively influence things little by little every day. Spreading empowerment, compassion, and love gradually adds up and will produce noticeable change. Engaging in your community or a cause that is important to you can be an easy way to have a good effect, as can listening intently and having a positive influence on someone else's life.
