Uttarakhand is buzzing with electrifying energy as the National Games 2025 kicks off, bringing together India’s top sporting talent. Now in its 38th edition, this premier multi-sport spectacle—modeled after the Olympics—sees athletes from 28 states, eight Union Territories, and the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) battle for supremacy across 32 disciplines.
The National Games, in their modern avatar, were revamped in 1985, but their origins date back to the 1920s, when they were known as the Indian Olympic Games. Since their transformation, they have become a proving ground for some of India’s finest athletes, many of whom go on to achieve international success.
The 2025 National Games officially began on January 26, with the triathlon setting the stage. Sarungbam Athouba Meitei secured the first gold medal of the event for Manipur in the men’s individual triathlon. Meanwhile, Maharashtra's Dolly Devidas Patil clinched the women's individual triathlon title.
In the race for the prestigious Raja Bhalindra Singh Trophy, awarded to the best-performing state based on medal points, Karnataka currently leads the tally with five golds and two silvers. Over the years, Services-a team composed of Army personnel has been the most dominant team, winning the overall championship four times, while defending champions Maharashtra have claimed the title thrice.
The Games feature some of India’s top athletes, including Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain (boxing), ace shooters Swapnil Kusale, Sarabjot Singh, and Vijay Kumar, and track-and-field stars Tajinderpal Singh Toor (shot put), Parul Chaudhary (3000m steeplechase), Ancy Sojan Edappilly (long jump), Jyothi Yarraji (100m hurdles), and Amoj Jacob (400m).
In shooting, Haryana’s Ramita Jindal delivered a record-breaking performance in the 10m air rifle qualification round, scoring 634.9, surpassing the 634.5 shot by Korea’s Ban Hyojin in the Paris Olympic Games qualifiers. Meanwhile, Punjab’s Vijayveer Singh Sidhu topped the men's rapid fire pistol event.
The first day of the National Games was packed with exciting moments. Karnataka’s Dhinidhi Desinghu set a national record in the women’s 200m freestyle swimming, winning three gold medals, while Srihari Nataraj added two golds to Karnataka’s tally. In Wushu, Manipur dominated, with Konjengbam Luxmi Devi, Bonish Yurembam, and Tongbram Saya Chanu securing gold, while Services' Mayanglambam Singh won the men’s Changquan event.
Badminton saw an intense battle, with Uttarakhand edging Karnataka 3-2 in the men’s team event, while their women's team triumphed over Gujarat in a close contest. Meanwhile, Rajasthan’s men’s team outplayed Arunachal Pradesh.
In rugby sevens, Odisha, West Bengal, and Bihar secured commanding victories in the women’s category, while Haryana and Odisha continued their dominance in the men’s division.
With the Games still unfolding, more record-breaking performances and thrilling contests are expected. The battle for supremacy in the National Games 2025 is heating up, and all eyes are on the athletes striving to make history.
