Mumbai has a new destination for book lovers—and it is far more than just a place to pick up a good read.
The Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) opened The Library on November 1, creating a space where books, art, food and conversations come together under one beautifully designed roof.
Spread across multiple levels, The Library offers visitors an eclectic collection of more than 4,500 books in English and regional languages. But its real charm lies in the invitation it extends: to slow down, browse without a plan and simply enjoy the pleasure of lingering.
The experience begins at the Edit Room, a transitional space featuring a long coffee bar, high chairs and even an indoor banyan tree. From there, visitors enter a world of towering bookshelves, warm wooden panelling, crystal chandeliers and inviting reading corners.
A striking spiral staircase leads to a cosy mezzanine that feels like a hidden retreat for readers. Here, shelves lined with paperbacks offer visitors the chance to settle in with a cup of tea or coffee and lose themselves in a story.
The collection itself is designed for all kinds of readers. Collectible Marvel comics and graphic novels share shelf space with books on celebrated artists such as S.H. Raza, alongside titles on history, food, art and culture.
At the heart of the space is a small stage that will host lectures, book readings and open-mic sessions, adding a lively cultural dimension to the experience. Food, too, is an important part of the story. Visitors can move effortlessly from browsing a book to enjoying a meal, making The Library a place where an afternoon can unfold at its own leisurely pace.
Photographs tracing Mumbai's transformation line the staircase walls, while distinctive artwork adds colour and character to the experience. Books are also available for purchase, allowing visitors to take home a discovery from their visit.
With its blend of literature, art, design and food, The Library is not simply a place to read—it is a space designed for curiosity, creativity and connection.
In a city that rarely slows down, Mumbai's newest cultural retreat offers a simple invitation: find a book, find a corner and stay awhile.
