"Dream, Dream, Dream! Conduct these dreams into thoughts, and then transform them into action."

Earlier this year 16 stray puppies were killed at Kolkata’s NRS hospital and such incidents keep occurring in almost every city. Some get highlighted while some don’t. 28-year-old Amal Mahato from Kolkata says that the pariahs were not born to be treated in such a deplorable way because they deserve a life much better.
Amal has dedicated his entire life to stray animals and wishes to work for them throughout. While talking to My Indian Dream, Amal beamed with pride as he said: “The dogs in my area have not faced any health problems for the past 6 to 7 months. I take good care of them. They are absolutely fit. However, we had to recently rush a dog to the hospital who was hit by a vehicle.”
There was a time when Amal’s neighbours used to complain him regarding the dogs in his area which started bothering him a lot. So he decided to work on it. “I spoke to the councillor of our ward as well as the people of the locality and asked them to give us a time of one year to sort out every problem. We got each dog from that area sterilized which has reduced the population. People are now happy with me and my dogs. I have even seen those people feeding them which gives me immense joy” says Amal.
Talking about receiving assistance from people, Amal says that he is extremely lucky to be surrounded by several such individuals. “Somnath Haldar has taught me a lot about the medication part and I am very grateful to him. Sukanya Sen, Tanya Mazumder, Maddi Das, Piyali Bose, Damayanti Sen, and Papiya Adhikari are some of the people who support me through every thick and thin. I am nothing without their help.”
The ardent animal activist believes that animal lovers should feed the dogs with responsibility. A lot of people don’t like the area where they are feeding to get dirty. Therefore, they must make sure to clean the place once the dog finishes its food. Going against the people and fighting with them can have a negative impact on the strays.
Sometimes, when a dog suffers from maggots, people often put phenyl on the wound owing to which the dog can feel a burning sensation. And that is the reason why Amal urges everyone to take them to a vet if they are unaware of any treatment.
Sterilizing the pariahs can result in several benefits not only for the stray dogs but, also for society. Therefore, Amal requests each and everyone to take a step ahead and get the strays sterilized. But, one must even know that sterilization must not be done during the monsoons because coming in contact with water can be harmful to the dogs after the operation.
People will start accepting our strays the way they are if people like Amal reside in every nook and cranny of this world. We at My Indian Dream urge all of you out there to fund people like him because they need it to treat more dogs.
