India’s rising mathematical stars have once again proved that the country is a powerhouse of young scientific talent. At the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2026 in Shanghai, China, the Indian contingent delivered an extraordinary performance, winning two gold medals and four silver medals. while securing an impressive global rank of seventh among 117 participating countries.
The achievement is even more remarkable considering that this year's Olympiad was the largest in the competition's history, with 666 of the world's brightest students competing in one of the toughest academic contests on the planet.
Adding another feather to India's cap, this marks the fourth consecutive year that the nation has finished among the top 10 countries at the prestigious Mathematics Olympiad.
India's six-member team ensured that every participant returned home with a medal, making it a clean sweep for the nation.
Leading the charge were Aarav Gupta from Delhi and Abel George Mathew from Karnataka, who clinched coveted gold medals with exceptional problem-solving performances.

The International Mathematical Olympiad is widely regarded as the pinnacle of pre-university mathematics competitions. Since its inception in 1959, it has brought together the brightest school students from around the globe to solve problems that demand creativity, deep analytical thinking, and exceptional mathematical insight.
This year's edition in Shanghai raised the bar even higher, attracting 666 participants from 117 nations, making it the biggest IMO ever held.
With only six contestants representing each country, every score plays a crucial role in determining the final rankings, making India's seventh-place finish an exceptional accomplishment.
Behind every Olympiad success lies years of dedicated mentoring and training. India's 2026 team was guided by an experienced leadership group comprising Anant Mudgal of Mathelots Pvt. Ltd. as Team Leader and Dr. Mainak Ghosh of the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) as Deputy Leader.
Supporting the contingent were observers Siddharth Choppara of the Chennai Mathematical Institute and Adhitya Mangudy of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA.
Perhaps the most inspiring aspect of this journey is that three members of the mentoring team are themselves former IMO medal winners. Having once stood on the Olympiad podium as students, they returned years later to nurture the next generation of India's mathematical talent, creating a powerful legacy of excellence and mentorship.
The mathematics triumph comes amid an extraordinary year for Indian students on the international academic stage. Teams representing the country have delivered outstanding performances in the Physics, Chemistry, and Biology Olympiads, signalling a new era of excellence across STEM disciplines.
These consistent achievements underline the strength of India's talent pipeline and the growing impact of institutions such as HBCSE, dedicated mentors, and a vibrant network of Olympiad training programmes.
As India's young minds continue to solve some of the world's toughest mathematical puzzles, they are also solving a much bigger equation—proving that the country's future in science, technology, research, and innovation is brighter than ever.
