Born with spina bifida, a condition that affects the spine, Niranjan Mukundan could have allowed his diagnosis to define the limits of his life. Instead, he chose to dive into uncharted waters, powered by determination, passion, and a deep love for swimming. With the steady support of his family and coaches John Christopher and Miguel Lopez Alvarado, Niranjan transformed a personal pursuit into a celebrated international career. At the Bergen Swim Festival 2025 in Norway—one of the country’s most prestigious and competitive aquatic events—Niranjan made history. Amidst a field of over 800 athletes from 16 countries, including both able-bodied and para-swimmers, he delivered a powerful performance that reaffirmed his status as one of India’s top para-athletes.
He clinched two silver medals and one bronze, marking a standout moment not just in the event, but in Indian sporting history.
