The Madras High Court has passed a rule to play the National Song ‘Vande Mataram’ at least once a week, preferably on Mondays or Fridays, in all educational institutes including schools, colleges and universities.  

K. Veeramani had taken Teacher Eligibility test in 2013 in which he marked the language in which Vande Mataram was written as Bengali, but the answer key had it as Sanskrit. He later filed a petition to Tamil Nadu Teacher’s Recruitment Board to award one mark to him. Over the petition, Justice M.V. Muralidharan passed an order to grant one mark to the petitioner. Justice further stated that 'India is our motherland' must always be remembered by the citizens of the country. Many sacrificed their lives and families in the freedom struggle and songs like Vande Mataram had created a sense of belief for the people in those tough times.

Justice also said that the national song must be played and sung at least once in a month at in all government offices, private companies, factories and industries. Further, the court also ordered that if in any case any person or organization has difficulty in singing or playing the national song, he or she must not be compelled to sing provided they have valid reasons.
