India is gearing up to expand its space program with the establishment of a new launchpad, the Kulasekarapattinam spaceport. Located close to the southern tip of Tamil Nadu, this facility is set to play a crucial role in India's space ambitions. With PM Narendra Modi laying the foundation stone on February 28, the spaceport is expected to commence operations in two years, bolstering India's position in the global space race.
A Strategic Location for Launching Satellites
Rockets launched from Kulasekarapattinam will enjoy a unique advantage due to its geographical location. Unlike the existing launch site at Sriharikota, Kulasekarapattinam does not require a dogleg maneuver during launch. This means that rockets can take a straight flight path without the need for a sharp turn, saving fuel and increasing payload capacity. With no landmass along its flight path, Kulasekarapattinam proves to be an ideal launchpad for India's space endeavors.
Boosting India's Small Satellite Market
The Kulasekarapattinam spaceport will primarily focus on launching nano- and microsatellites. These smaller satellites have gained popularity due to their affordability and their applications in navigation and remote sensing. With the global small satellite market projected to reach $13.7 billion by 2030, India aims to tap into this growing market by launching its Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) rocket from Kulasekarapattinam. The spaceport will enable India to cater to the increasing global demand for launching small satellites.
Private Sector Involvement and Job Creation
In line with the government's efforts to promote private sector participation in the space industry, the Kulasekarapattinam spaceport will witness increased involvement from private players. The recent opening of the space sector to private companies and the allowance of 100% foreign direct investment (FDI) have paved the way for greater collaboration and innovation. To further support the growth of space technology industries, the Tamil Nadu government plans to establish a space industrial and propellant park near the spaceport. This initiative is expected to create an industry cluster, spark job creation, and foster an ecosystem for space-related activities.
Timeline and Facilities at Kulasekarapattinam
Isro chairman S Somanath has stated that the Kulasekarapattinam spaceport will be ready for operations within two years. While initially starting with one launchpad, the site will also feature rocket integration facilities, a mobile launch structure, and checkout computers, similar to the existing Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota. The spaceport's infrastructure will enable regular launches of Isro's SSLV rocket, ensuring a smooth and efficient launch process.
With its strategic location and advanced facilities, the Kulasekarapattinam spaceport is poised to revolutionize India's space ambitions
