Kochi-based architect Vinu Daniel has been honored by TIME magazine, securing a place in their prestigious '100 Next - The World's Rising Stars' list. Known for his commitment to sustainable architecture, Daniel's firm, Wallmakers, strives to create environmentally responsive spaces that blend innovation and functionality.
TIME curator Paola Antonelli highlighted Daniel's emphasis on local wisdom and material culture as crucial elements in promoting responsible practices towards the environment. Daniel's philosophy revolves around the idea of reducing environmental impact in every project, advocating for the reduction of resources like cement and the preservation of trees.
Growing up in Dubai, Daniel relocated to his ancestral home in Kerala at the age of 17 to pursue his studies in architecture at the College of Engineering Trivandrum. It was during this time that he encountered renowned sustainable architect Laurie Baker, a transformative encounter that shaped his career.
After completing his degree in 2005, Daniel collaborated with the Auroville Earth Institute for the United Nations Development Programme, where he contributed to post-tsunami construction efforts. In 2007, he established Wallmakers, a firm dedicated to sustainable building practices. The name "Wallmakers" was chosen for its humble beginnings, as the inaugural project involved constructing a compound wall.
Daniel's approach to architecture aligns with Mahatma Gandhi's vision of using locally-sourced materials within a five-kilometer radius. His studio showcases the beauty of craftsmanship and teamwork, where mud bricks are transformed into stunning architectural elements, and remnants of previous structures find new life.
The inclusion of Vinu Daniel in the TIME100 list underscores his significant influence in the field of sustainable architecture and offers a glimpse into the future of leadership. Joining him from India on the esteemed list are cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur and tuberculosis survivor Nandita Venkatesan
