In the depths of the Attapadi forest in Palakkad, Kerala, a heart-rending story of resilience and compassion unfolds with the tale of Kanmani, a six-month-old elephant calf. Abandoned and wounded, Kanmani's fate took an unexpected turn when she was discovered by a team of compassionate veterinarians and forest guards.
Kanmani had injury marks all over her body and she was struggling. Her plight tugged at the hearts of those who found her. A dedicated team led by veterinarian David Abraham and attendant Shanti stepped forward to nurture her back to health. Her recovery wasn't just a duty for them; it became a symbol of hope. It is proof of the unyielding spirit of both human empathy and animal resilience.
Palakkad DFO Kurra Srinivas recounted the initial discovery. He stated that they tried hard to reunite Kanmani with her herd. However, as her health deteriorated, the risks of leaving her alone in the wilderness grew. Her safety became a major concern. On the suggestion of the veterinary doctor, the decision was made to transport her to the nearest elephant camp.
Under the watchful eyes of her caretakers, Kanmani's progress has been remarkable. From initially consuming half a litre of milk to now drinking 2 to 2.5 litres, her recovery is evident. Her wounds have healed, allowing her to roam, play, and relish her newfound lease on life.
Despite losing her mother at a tender age, Kanmani has found solace in the constant care provided by Shanti, who tends to her needs from dawn till nightfall. Her resilience and the unwavering support she received depict the power of human-animal connections and the beauty of second chances.
Kanmani's story demonstrates the unwavering dedication of those who stand by her side, ensuring her safety, recovery, and ultimately, her journey toward a new life filled with hope and healing.
