India’s men's and women's table tennis teams have secured their berths for the Olympics, marking the first time in history that India will be represented in this sport at the Olympics.
The journey to Olympic qualification wasn't without its challenges. In the World Team Championships Finals in Busan last month, both teams had faltered in the pre-quarterfinals. However, their consistent performance in the world rankings proved decisive in securing the coveted Olympic spots.
The Indian men's team, ranked 15th, and the women's team, ranked 13th, showcased their mettle on the global stage, earning their places among the top 16 teams set to compete in Paris. This achievement reflects the collective dedication and perseverance of the players.
Kamlesh Mehta, Secretary of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI), expressed immense pride in the teams' historic feat, acknowledging the pivotal role played by the federation, coaches, and players. He credited their sustained efforts and strategic planning for this remarkable accomplishment.
The qualification of both men's and women's teams opens up opportunities for individual players as well. With spots available for singles events, the TTFI is poised to make important decisions in selecting the most deserving candidates to represent India on the Olympic stage.
G. Sathiyan, a prominent member of the men's team, hailed the achievement as a "double bonanza," emphasizing the significance of the women's team also making the cut. He highlighted the rigorous training and notable performances over the past years that contributed to this milestone.
The road to Olympic qualification was marked by significant victories and strategic maneuvers. Sathiyan underscored the importance of key wins, such as defeating Kazakhstan in the pre-quarterfinals, which played a crucial role in securing the Olympic berth for India.
Veteran player Sharat Kamal, who has earlier participated in four Olympics, expressed his delight at the prospect of competing in the big event as part of the team. He emphasized the importance of maintaining their world rankings and the potential to make a mark in the team events at Paris.
As the countdown to the Olympics begins, players like Harmeet Desai and Ayhika Mukherjee eagerly await the final team selections. Desai, whose pivotal performance against Kazakhstan propelled India to the round-of-16, anticipates his debut Olympic appearance, while Mukherjee remains hopeful of being part of the historic journey to Paris.
The qualification of India's table tennis teams for the Olympics marks a significant milestone in the nation's sporting landscape, inspiring a new generation of players. As the players gear up to represent their country on the grandest stage of all, they carry with them the hopes and aspirations of a nation rallying behind them.
