The Indian Navy is strengthening the country’s defence system by further adding a fleet of seven warships which are being currently built at a rapid pace by using modular construction technique. All seven warships are expected to be ready by 2026 or 2027.
To set the pace for making new warships, the ongoing project, 17-A has adopted modular construction which brings down the building time of each warship from seven-eight years to three-four years. Each warship is being constructed at a cost of around Rs 6,300 crore. Its advanced automation will bring down the manpower usage considerably. The warships will incorporate the latest stealth features and carry a compact weapon platform which will facilitate the launch of Barak 8 and BrahMos missiles.
For the first time, India has adopted the modular construction technique which is slated to lay the path for future shipbuilding. It involves building a multi-thousand-tonne warship in small modules, which are brought together and assembled at one place. The advantage of this technique is that the modules can be made for all the seven ships at one go, thus reducing the construction time.
The warships are being built at Kolkata and Mumbai and trials are expected to begin in 2021.
