The Indian government has approved a whopping ₹16,000 crore budget for the construction of a strategic highway near the China border in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. This move highlights the government's commitment to bolster connectivity and infrastructure in border areas. The newly sanctioned project aims to enhance security, curb migration, promote tourism, and facilitate the development of hydropower projects.
Enhancing Connectivity and Security:
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has allocated funds for the construction of over 600 kilometers of the 1,748-kilometer-long frontier highway in Arunachal Pradesh. The proposed Greenfield highway, known as NH 913, will run in close proximity to the India-Tibet-China-Myanmar border, with multiple sections located just 20 kilometers away from it. The development of these highway stretches is expected to significantly improve connectivity to border areas and establish vital road infrastructure connecting major river basins.
Curbing Migration and Boosting Tourism:
Nitin Gadkari, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways, emphasized that the approved highway stretches would play a crucial role in curbing migration and facilitating reverse migration towards the border areas of Arunachal Pradesh. Moreover, the planned highway is designed to link uninhabited and sparsely populated regions of upper Arunachal, making it conducive to tourism. The government anticipates a substantial increase in traffic due to the growth of tourism activities in the future.
Promoting Hydropower Projects:
The strategic highway will not only enhance connectivity and tourism but also pave the way for the development of several hydropower projects within the state. The improved road infrastructure will enable easier access to significant river basins, creating opportunities for the establishment of hydropower plants. This initiative aligns with the government's vision to promote renewable energy and ensure reliable power supply in the region.
Bidding and Construction Timeline:
The next phase of the project involves initiating the bidding process by highway agencies, which is set to commence in July or August. Once the bidding process is complete, construction work will commence promptly. The implementation of this ambitious project will require efficient project management, coordination, and adherence to timelines to ensure timely completion.
National Security and Border Management:
Given its proximity to the border, the strategic highway assumes great importance in terms of national security. Improved connectivity will facilitate the movement of troops and resources, strengthening India's border management capabilities. Furthermore, the highway's construction will enhance surveillance and monitoring along the border, contributing to heightened security measures.
The successful implementation of the highway will not only facilitate smoother transportation but also bolster India's presence and connectivity in the strategically important region.
