The Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kochi transformed into a vibrant hub of culture and art on Sunday as Mridanga Naadam 2024 hosted an extraordinary Bharatanatyam performance. Led by actor and Bharatanatyam artist Divyaa Unni, the event brought together 11,600 dancers on a single stage, setting a Guinness World Record for the largest Bharatanatyam performance.
Themed "Kailasam," the performance embodied the spirit of devotion and artistry. The dancers, clad in resplendent blue sarees, gracefully aligned to perform to a specially composed song penned by the legendary Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri. Set to music by his son Deepankuran and sung by Anoop Sankar, the song added depth and grandeur to the event. Months of rigorous training and preparation culminated in this awe-inspiring spectacle.
The event was inaugurated by Minister for Cultural Affairs Saji Cherian, with prominent figures like Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri and actor Sijoy Varghese in attendance. The eight-minute dance program highlighted the seamless blend of tradition and modernity, as thousands moved in unison, leaving the audience spellbound.
The 35,000-capacity stadium brimmed with over 50,000 spectators, reflecting the immense enthusiasm for the event. The meticulously organized performance reflected the skill and dedication of every participant.
More than just a record-breaking attempt, Mridanga Naadam 2024 symbolized unity through art. The event highlighted the unifying power of dance, breaking down barriers of language, age, and background to bring people together.
Speaking about the achievement, a spokesperson for the event said, “This was a celebration of our cultural legacy and the collective effort of thousands. The Guinness World Record adds to the pride of this achievement.”
As the curtains fell, the event stood as a shining example of how tradition and collaboration can create something truly extraordinary.
