Indian students have once again proven their mettle on the global stage, clinching six gold medals at the 21st International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO). The event was held in Bucharest, Romania, from December 2 to 11, 2024. Indian students competed against over 300 students from 52 countries. India not only excelled individually but also claimed the title of "Best Country" at the prestigious event.
The IJSO is a unique platform that tests the scientific prowess of high school students in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The competition involves challenging theoretical and experimental tasks, with participants ranked among the top 10% earning gold medals. India’s team not only secured individual brilliance but also showcased exceptional teamwork, securing six gold medals for the country.
The journey to the IJSO begins with the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT). It organizes a meticulous three-level selection and training process under the guidance of the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Mumbai. This process starts with over 50,000 high school students from across the country competing in the first round. After successive rounds of rigorous testing, only six students emerge to represent India on the global platform.
This year’s gold medalists include:
Their achievements reflect their hard work and dedication, as well as the robust training and mentoring provided by the IAPT team.
To honor these young achievers, a grand felicitation ceremony was held on December 13, 2024, at Vidyavardhaka Sangha, Rajajinagar. The event was graced by distinguished personalities, including Prof. Anil Kumar, Dean of IISc, as the chief guest. Other notable attendees included Prof. Ahluwalia, President of IAPT, and Prof. Dwarakanath and Prof. Lakshminarasu from Vidyavardhaka Sangha.
Along with the students, their mentors were also felicitated. The mentors' guidance and expertise have also played a pivotal role in this extraordinary accomplishment.
The Indian government gave enormous support to these young talents. It shows the nation’s commitment to fostering excellence in science and education.
The IJSO is more than just a competition. It is a celebration of young scientific talent from around the world, promoting cross-cultural exchange and a shared love for discovery and innovation. For Indian students, participating and excelling in such global events highlights the country’s educational strengths and the bright future of its scientific community. It showcases the strength of India’s education system and the immense potential of its youth.
Here’s to the young minds who make India proud and to the mentors who help them shine!
