India has joined the United States and 24 other countries in a major international initiative focused on shaping the development of next-generation 6G networks.

The move places India at an important table as countries begin working on the technologies that could define the future of wireless communication. The initiative aims to ensure that emerging networks reflect shared security interests, boost competitiveness and encourage innovation. The announcement was made by the US Department of Commerce in a social media post.

India-US Partnership Gets Bigger

The development followed a meeting between Jitin Prasada, Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on the sidelines of the G20 Innovation Ministerial.

The two leaders discussed the future of 6G and the need for stronger international cooperation in developing advanced telecommunications networks. Their discussions also extended beyond 6G. Semiconductors, artificial intelligence and data centres were among the key areas explored, highlighting the growing technology partnership between India and the US.

Prasada also encouraged greater US investment in ISM 2.0, while proposing stronger cooperation in AI technology and sharing a mechanism for AI safeguards.

Building the Technologies of Tomorrow

Prasada led the Indian delegation at the G20 Innovation Ministers’ meeting held on September 1 and 2 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The meeting was hosted by the US Department of Commerce and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.  The gathering concluded with the G20 Innovation Ministerial Statement, which underlined how emerging technologies can create greater prosperity, productivity and opportunity.

For India, the message goes beyond simply developing faster networks. The country is looking to turn strategic technology partnerships into opportunities for innovation, economic growth and better quality of life. India also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation in AI, semiconductors, digital public infrastructure (DPI), robotics and other emerging technologies.

As the world begins laying the groundwork for the 6G era, India’s participation signals its ambition to not just adopt the technologies of tomorrow—but help shape them.
