The inaugural Kho Kho World Cup got off to an electrifying start on January 13, with India registering a spectacular 42-37 victory over Nepal at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. This thrilling win not only secured India’s first victory in the competition but also set the tone for what promises to be an action-packed tournament.
The Indian men's team, led by captain Pratik Waikar, delivered a near-perfect performance in their opening match. The team’s dominance was evident right from the first turn, as they dismantled Nepal’s first three defenders within just 60 seconds. The swift and aggressive play that followed highlighted India’s mastery of the game, with flying jumps by Waikar and Ramji Kashyap leaving the opposition stunned. By the end of Turn 1, India had already built a formidable 14-point lead, with three minutes still to spare. A standout moment came when Sachin Bhargo, replacing Waikar as the ‘Wazir’, executed an astonishing skydive, lifting the score to 24 touch points by halftime.
India’s commanding performance on the court wasn't just about the skills of individual players, but about the teamwork and strategy that powered them to victory. The team’s seamless coordination and high-intensity play were on full display, making it clear that India is a top contender in the Kho Kho World Cup 2025.
With the victory over Nepal behind them, the Indian team is already looking ahead to their next challenge. On Tuesday, they will take on Brazil in their second match, eager to continue their winning streak. Meanwhile, the Indian women’s team will kickstart their campaign, aiming to replicate the men’s success with a win over South Korea.
The Kho Kho World Cup 2025 officially began on Monday with an eye-catching opening ceremony, attended by high-profile dignitaries such as Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President, PT Usha. The ceremony set the stage for a week of thrilling Kho Kho action, bringing together 39 teams from around the world. The men’s tournament features 20 teams, while the women’s competition includes 19 teams.
Kho Kho has long been a part of India’s tradition. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, who attended the inauguration, expressed his excitement about the event, stating, “Kho Kho has been a part of our lives and tradition. I’m thrilled that the World Cup is being held in India, and we aim to bring it to even greater international prominence.”
Kho Kho, believed to have originated in Maharashtra, has a fascinating history that dates back centuries. Once played on chariots, the game has evolved over time and now takes place on mats. Kho Kho’s structured rules were written in 1914 by Pune’s Deccan Gymkhana, marking the sport’s shift toward a professional format. The first national Kho Kho championship was held in 1959, and the sport has since grown into a global phenomenon, with more than 50 countries participating today.
The Kho Kho World Cup 2025, a week-long tournament, is set to culminate in an exciting finale on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at 7:00 PM IST.
The quarter-finals are set to take place from January 17 to 18, featuring the top two teams from each group vying for a spot in the final showdown.
