India celebrates its National Sports Day on 29 August every year. On this day, various sports activities are organized in schools, academic institutions and sports academies to promote sports.
The President also gives away the prestigious awards like Khel Ratna, Arjuna Awards to outstanding and talented players who have made India proud through their exemplary skills in their respective sports.
Every year, National Sports Day is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of the legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand who won three Olympic gold medals for India. Dhyan Chand had joined the Indian Army in 1922. He was encouraged to take up hockey by Subedar Major Tiwari who also trained him. He is one of the greatest sportsperson that India has produced and this day is celebrated as a tribute to the hockey genius.
The theme of National Sports Day 2019 is Fit India, Young India. This theme stresses on the importance of sports and physical activities in creating active communities, active schools, and active families and to build a Fit, Healthy, and Youthful India. National Sports Day is celebrated all over India by organizing different types of sports like Marathons, Walkathons, Hockey, Football, Volleyball, etc.
The day also emphasizes the need to build a Fit, Healthy and Youthful India. After all, sports brings enthusiasm in children, entertainment for youngsters, recognition to players and glory to the nation.
