Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has developed a haze removal algorithm that removes the haze from the images captured by Earth observation satellites like CartoSat Series of Satellites.
This is a very important step. The current approaches require processing information from visible and shortwave infrared channels. But the sensors used in CartoSat series of satellites have visible and near infrared range sensors which can’t provide them simultaneously. The approach used by ISRO used the available sensors in the satellites and their data captured. The data is then compared with the already existing data set of optical properties of aerosols (particles that create haze). This helps in clearing the haze from the images. ISRO in its statement explaining the approach said, ‘The algorithm uses lookup tables generated with vector radiative transfer calculations. Derived aerosol information and pre-computed lookup tables are employed to derive surface reflectance. Good quality surface reflectances have been obtained when this algorithm was applied on Cartosat-2 Series Satellite data.’
The Cartosat series of Satellites help scientists to monitor the changes happening on the surface of the Earth. It provides multi spectral images in visible and near infrared range.
