After the 26/11 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai, India has strengthened its coastal security as the ten terrorists had reached the metropolis from Pakistan sailing through the Arabian Sea.
Now, the ISRO has pitched in to help secure the country’s coastal borders by planning to provide 1,000 transponders and satellite imageries that will monitor and thwart any possible terrorist attack.
Fishermen have been issued biometric identity cards. An official informed that boats will be monitored by setting up an automatic identification system in all boats above 20 metres, while colour coding of boats was being undertaken by coastal states and Union Territories for easier monitoring in the high seas and on the International Maritime Boundary Line.
Another official stated that Standard operating procedures (SOPs) were developed for dealing with the breach of the International Maritime Boundary Line and SOPs were issued for upgrading security in non-major ports and single point mooring facilities.
For every country, security of the coastline is vital especially for India as there are nuclear stations, missile launching centres, defence and oil installations along the coast.
Isro move to provide 1,000 transponders by March 2018 as part of the coastal security ring is an important aspect of the coastal security operations.
