In a groundbreaking move that promises to redefine the landscape of international education, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) is set to open its first global campus in Japan in collaboration with the prestigious Tohoku University. This pioneering initiative marks a new era of Indo-Japanese collaboration, blending Indian academic excellence with Japanese innovation.

IIT Bombay's decision to partner with Tohoku University, a renowned and government-supported Japanese institution, is a reflection of the growing academic and research ties between India and Japan. The collaboration will focus on conducting research-focused PhD programs and MTech courses, providing students with unparalleled opportunities for growth and development. With around 1,600 Indian students currently pursuing higher education in Japan, this partnership is expected to attract more students and talent from India.

With the first academic session expected to commence in 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and infrastructure readiness, this collaboration marks a significant milestone in IIT Bombay's journey towards becoming a global academic leader. As IIT Bombay Director Prof Shireesh Kedare aptly puts it, "This is our first venture abroad, and by next year, we will begin with a joint PhD programme. MTech courses will follow soon after" .
