In the heart of Tasmania, a maritime marvel has been born: Hull 096, the world's largest battery-electric ship. Stretching 130 meters and weighing in with over 250 tons of batteries, this aluminium catamaran is a statement. Manufactured by Incat Tasmania, an Australian company, it is the world’s largest electric ship and the biggest electric vehicle ever constructed. This maritime marvel — also named China Zorrilla — is set to ferry passengers and vehicles across the River Plate, connecting Buenos Aires and Uruguay. It has been commissioned by South American ferry operator Buquebus.
Originally designed to run on liquefied natural gas, the vessel underwent a transformative redesign during the pandemic, embracing a fully electric propulsion system. This shift not only underscores the adaptability of modern engineering but also marks a significant stride towards sustainable maritime transport.
Powering the Future: Engineering Feats
Hull 096's propulsion is a reflection of cutting-edge technology. Its energy storage system, developed by Finnish company Wärtsilä and powered by Corvus Energy's battery modules, boasts a capacity exceeding 40 megawatt-hours, quadrupling any existing maritime battery system. The ship employs eight electric-driven waterjets, ensuring efficient and swift navigation across its route.
Charging such a behemoth requires equally impressive infrastructure, hence, superfast chargers capable of recharging the vessel in 60 to 90 minutes are being installed on both sides of the river. This integration of advanced propulsion and charging systems positions Hull 096 at the forefront of zero-emission maritime technology.
A Floating Retail Haven
Beyond its engineering prowess, Hull 096 offers passengers an unparalleled onboard experience. The vessel houses a 2,300 square meter duty-free retail deck, the largest on any ferry worldwide. This expansive space transforms the ferry into a floating shopping destination, enhancing the journey between Argentina and Uruguay.
The combination of sustainable transport and luxury amenities exemplifies how environmental responsibility and passenger comfort can coexist harmoniously.
Charting a Course for Sustainable Shipping
The launch of Hull 096 signifies more than just the addition of a new vessel as it represents a paradigm shift in maritime transport. With the shipping industry accounting for nearly 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, the adoption of electric propulsion systems is a crucial step towards reducing this footprint.
As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change, Hull 096 stands as a symbol of innovation, demonstrating that sustainable, large-scale, low-emission transport solutions are not only possible, they are ready now. In summary, Hull 096 is not just a ferry, it's a floating proof of human ingenuity and our collective commitment to a greener future.
