Post the Covid-19 pandemic, the faculty at Buxton School, a high school in northwest Massachusetts, observed that smartphone usage has increased considerably and students no longer interacted with each other. According to a New York Post report, they had trouble communicating with one another, and their ability to be with or sit with other individuals was utterly gone.
Head of School Peter Beck felt something amiss and after discussion with faculty, decided to ban mobile phones (both iPhones and Androids) on the school’s 114-acre campus. The prohibition was implemented this September and it has been a huge success, reported the Outlet.
Mr.Beck stated that some students expressed fear after hearing the announcement as they were unable to imagine how their lives would be without their most indispensable gadget. However, it was heartening to see the students adapting to the change and gradually transforming themselves. They were devoting more time to academic pursuits, artistic expression, interpersonal interaction, and self-discovery.
The students are not entirely cut off from the outside world, though. According to The Post, each student received a Light Phone, a stylish device with minimal features possessing the ability to send and receive basic SMS and calls.
