An Apple Watch has been credited with saving the life of a woman from Illinois after it alerted her to a potentially life-threatening medical issue while she was sleeping.
Erin Sykes, a 26-year-old nurse, had been wearing her Apple Watch to bed when she received a notification that her heart rate had spiked to 169 beats per minute. Sykes, who had no prior history of heart problems, immediately went to the emergency room where doctors discovered she had a pulmonary embolism, a blockage in one of the arteries in her lungs.
According to medical experts, pulmonary embolisms can be fatal if not treated quickly. However, Sykes was able to seek medical attention in time and is now recovering. Sykes credits her Apple Watch for detecting the medical issue, stating that she would have otherwise slept through the night and not known about her condition until it was too late.
The incident has once again highlighted the potential life-saving capabilities of wearable technology. While many people use smartwatches and other wearable devices for fitness tracking and other purposes, they can also play an important role in monitoring health and detecting potential medical issues.
As wearable technology continues to evolve, it is likely that we will see more instances of these devices saving lives and helping people stay healthy.
