Northrup Grumman, a major player in aerospace and military, was recently chosen by DARPA to create the conceptual design for the moon railroad, a pivotal step in advancing space travel. The lunar train, which is envisioned as a system that could move people, goods, and resources over the lunar surface, has the potential to spur a growing space economy for the US and its allies. Even though it has been 52 years since the last person set foot on the moon, we are still moving forward in space travel with the next phase of lunar exploration. To build sustainable systems for our next lunar journey, scientists are working extremely hard, intending to have humans arrive on the moon in late 2026. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency oversees the moon railroad, which is merely one component of a larger strategy for lunar exploration and commerce (DARPA). Known as the 10-Year Lunar Architecture Capability Study (LunA-10), this large-scale moon train project aims to promote cooperation between more than a dozen businesses to produce state-of-the-art lunar technologies. DARPA seeks to avoid the mistakes of previous lunar missions, like the Apollo missions of the 1960s and 1970s, which included a lack of development or longevity despite large expenditure, by concentrating on accelerating a self-sustaining lunar economy.

Program manager Michael Nayak of DARPA's Strategic Technology Office thinks that having a presence on the moon can benefit life on Earth. Nayak, a former space shuttle engineer and planetary scientist at NASA, sees lunar resources like water ice and helium-3 being used for space travel and medical imaging in the future. Thus, the necessity of space travel and a lunar railroad. Transportation infrastructure is necessary for the effective movement of people and products, just like it is on Earth.
