For most middle-class families, a degree in engineering and a stable job represent success. For Mumbai's Shubham Vaidkar, however, success turned out to be something entirely different, a high-fashion runway in Milan, under the spotlight of one of the world's most iconic luxury brands.
The 24-year-old made headlines in February after walking for Giorgio Armani at Milan Fashion Week, but his journey began far from the glamour of international fashion. Just a few years ago, Shubham was a civil engineer earning around ₹30,000 a month, following a path that many expected him to take.
What happened next is a story of courage, conviction, and choosing passion over predictability.
Shubham's introduction to the world of fashion was surprisingly simple. It began while browsing fashion content and following international models on social media. What started as curiosity soon evolved into a serious interest. He spent hours researching the industry, watching tutorials, understanding the business of modelling, and learning what it took to succeed.
Despite having a stable job, something felt missing. After six months in the corporate world, he realized the routine no longer challenged or excited him. Faced with a difficult choice, he decided to take a leap of faith.
The thought that ultimately pushed him forward was simple yet powerful: he feared living with regret more than he feared failure.
Coming from a traditional middle-class background, pursuing modelling wasn't initially part of the plan. His family prioritized education and career stability, and like many parents, they viewed modelling as an uncertain profession. In fact, they were unaware of his modelling ambitions until he completed his first professional shoot in India.
When the photographs were released, their reaction surprised him. While concerns about stability remained, they were happy and supportive of his efforts.
At their request, Shubham completed his engineering degree before committing to modelling full-time. Over time, as they witnessed his discipline and dedication, their confidence in his unconventional career choice grew.
The transition from a fixed salary to an unpredictable creative industry wasn't easy. One of the biggest challenges was navigating uncertainty. Unlike corporate jobs that offer structured growth and financial security, the fashion industry operates on opportunities that are never guaranteed.
Rejection became a regular part of the journey. Speaking to Firstpost, Shubham said that there were numerous moments when he questioned himself, especially when castings didn't go his way. What helped him stay focused was guidance from experienced models who openly shared their own struggles and setbacks.
The turning point arrived when Shubham was scouted by agencies across major fashion capitals, including Milan, Paris, London, Germany, and New York.
His Milan-based agency eventually helped secure an opportunity that every aspiring model dreams about: Milan Fashion Week. Walking for Giorgio Armani marked a defining moment in his career. For Shubham, it was both a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and a reward for years of persistence behind the scenes.
The experience has transformed the way he views work and life. He believes that while stability matters, passion is equally important. The fashion world has taught him that creativity is not merely an add-on but meaningful work in its own right.
As he looks ahead, Shubham remains committed to building a long-term career in fashion, while exploring opportunities beyond modelling as well.
