Indian Railways have taken a big stride towards a greener future with the announcement of the country’s first hydrogen train. This comes as part of the budget for green growth and is a great example of India’s commitment towards sustainability. The train, which is designed and manufactured in India, will initially run on heritage circuits such as Kalka-Shimla. The route will eventually be expanded to other places, allowing more people to experience India’s culture and heritage.
The use of hydrogen as a fuel source for the train is a more environmentally friendly option than using traditional diesel engines. Hydrogen fuel cells convert hydrogen and oxygen, producing the electricity that powers the train’s motors. This clean energy transition fuel does not emit any air pollutants. Furthermore, hydrogen can be generated using renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydropower.
The high cost to construct these environmentally friendly hydrogen trains is the only roadblock. According to ICRA, the cost of operating a fuel cell-based hydrogen engine is 27% more expensive than that of a diesel engine in India. Green hydrogen is priced at about INR 492/kg. In spite of this, the government is continuing with the project, and a prototype of the hydrogen fuel-powered train is being built in the Northern Railway Workshop and will be tested on the Sonipat-Jind stretch of Haryana.
All in all, this project is a great move towards India’s goal of becoming a green nation. With the successful implementation of the hydrogen train, India can demonstrate its commitment to sustainability and provide people with the opportunity to explore the country’s culture and heritage without causing harm to the environment.
