The University of Hyderabad (UoH) recently hosted Millet-Utopia 2025, turning its campus into a vibrant hub of innovation and excitement. This inter-school competition provided a dynamic platform to educate young minds about the transformative potential of millets in tackling global issues like food security, nutrition, and environmental sustainability. With over 1,358 students from 50 schools participating, the event became a lively celebration of creativity and sustainability.
Themed ‘Millets for Food, Nutrition, Energy, and Environment,’ Millet-Utopia 2025 highlighted the versatile role of millets as climate-resilient crops essential for a sustainable future. Students from classes 8 to 10, accompanied by 168 dedicated teachers, arrived from across Hyderabad and beyond to participate in this grand event.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by Prof. Appa Rao Podile, former Vice-Chancellor of UoH and Senior Professor of the Department of Plant Sciences. Sharing personal anecdotes from his childhood, Prof. Podile spoke passionately about his journey with millets as a staple diet and a research focus. Prof. S. Rajagopal, Head of the Department, welcomed the attendees and emphasized how millets could play a pivotal role in combating food insecurity and promoting eco-friendly agricultural practices.
Millet-Utopia 2025 provided an engaging platform for students to showcase their talents and knowledge through six exciting competitions: quiz, debate, drawing, skit, writing, and elocution. Each activity was thoughtfully designed to spark curiosity and innovation, testing participants on their understanding of millets and their potential in sustainable development.
Staying true to the event’s theme, the refreshments and lunch served during Millet-Utopia 2025 were exclusively millet-based. This culinary experience showcased the versatility of millets. It also reinforced the importance of incorporating these nutrient-rich grains into everyday diets.
The event concluded with a grand prize distribution ceremony, where the exceptional efforts of participants were celebrated. Prof. B.J. Rao, Vice-Chancellor of UoH, served as the Chief Guest, presenting prizes to the winners.
“The enthusiasm and creativity displayed by the students are truly commendable,” said Prof. Rao. “Their passion for learning and contributing to a sustainable future gives hope for addressing global challenges with innovative solutions.”
Millet-Utopia 2025 has firmly established itself as a unique platform for raising awareness about millets and their critical role in sustainable agriculture. The overwhelming response this year reflects the growing recognition of millets as essential for combating food insecurity and climate change.
Carrying forward the legacy of the International Year of Millets in 2023, this event has become a powerful medium for engaging the youth in meaningful conversations about sustainability. By fostering innovation and pride in millets, Millet-Utopia has instilled a sense of responsibility toward building a better, greener tomorrow.
Through creativity, collaboration, and awareness, the participants and organizers sent a strong message—that millets are not just grains of the past but the cornerstone of a sustainable future.
