In a groundbreaking initiative, Governor Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan has spearheaded a low-cost project that is transforming the lives of tribal communities in Hyderabad. By harnessing the potential of natural resources, such as leaves from Butea monosperma and Bauhinia vahlii trees, the project aims to uplift the livelihoods of tribal groups.
Under the guidance of the National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRDPR), approximately 28 tribal youth have been trained in the art of crafting plates, bowls, and indentations for idlis using these eco-friendly leaves. The initiative has already shown promising results, with the products offering a sustainable alternative to paper or plastic plates.
RD Raju, a resource person for the project, highlighted the benefits of these leaf-based products. Food stored in these plates remains fresh for up to 18 hours, while idlis prepared in the leaf indentations stay fresh for an impressive 32 hours. Although slightly more expensive than conventional alternatives, these eco-friendly products contribute towards a healthier environment.
To support the tribal communities, Governor Soundararajan has pledged machinery and working capital amounting to Rs 2 lakh per village, facilitating the establishment of manufacturing units. The project not only generates additional income for the tribals but also reduces their reliance on government schemes like the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).
This innovative initiative holds the promise of transforming the lives of tribal communities by offering them a sustainable path to prosperity. By leveraging their traditional knowledge and embracing eco-friendly practices, these tribals are not only improving their livelihoods but also contributing to a greener and more sustainable future for all.
