India's young sporting stars are gearing up for another spectacular celebration of talent, determination and dreams. The 8th Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) 2026 will be hosted by Telangana, marking another major milestone in the country's mission to nurture future champions.
The announcement was made by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, who said the Games reflect Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of taking major sporting events across every region of the country while strengthening grassroots sports.
With more than 8,000 athletes, coaches, officials and support staff expected to participate, Telangana is preparing to transform into India's sporting capital this November.
The Khelo India Youth Games have become much more than a sporting competition. They are a launchpad where tomorrow's champions take their first big steps onto the national stage. From athletics and wrestling to hockey, swimming and gymnastics, the Games bring together the country's finest young athletes, many of whom go on to represent India at international competitions.
Announcing Telangana as the host, Dr. Mandaviya praised the state's sporting infrastructure and enthusiasm, expressing confidence that it is well-equipped to deliver a memorable edition of the Games. The event also offers young athletes an invaluable opportunity to compete against the nation's best while drawing inspiration from established stars.
This year's Khelo India Youth Games will arrive at an exciting moment for Indian sports. Scheduled after the Asian Games in Japan, the event is expected to feature athletes who will already be competing at peak fitness levels. According to Dr. Mandaviya, it will also allow aspiring youngsters to witness accomplished athletes up close, motivating them to dream bigger and train harder.
The Games have consistently served as a bridge between grassroots competitions and elite international success, with several Khelo India athletes eventually earning places on national teams.
Telangana becomes the second southern state in three years to host the prestigious event after Tamil Nadu successfully organised the 2024 edition. The previous Games were held in Bihar in 2025, where athletes produced remarkable performances across multiple disciplines.
At the Bihar edition, competitors participated in 28 sports, including e-sports as a demonstration event. The Games also witnessed 26 new records, with weightlifters accounting for 13 national youth records and athletes rewriting several meet records on the track.
The Khelo India initiative has transformed the sporting landscape by identifying promising athletes at a young age and providing them with exposure, coaching and opportunities to excel. As Telangana prepares to welcome thousands of participants from every corner of the country, the Games promise to be about far more than medals. They will celebrate perseverance, discipline, friendship and the limitless potential of India's youth.
The countdown has begun, and Telangana is ready to host a festival where India's next generation of sporting heroes will chase glory, inspire millions and prove that every champion starts with a dream.
