The National Defence Academy held its 149th Passing Out Parade; one name stood tall above hundreds: Cadet Deepak Kandpal. Hailing from the quiet town of Garud in Bageshwar, Uttarakhand, Deepak’s journey is more than an individual achievement; it is living proof of the power of belief and relentless hard work. For a country where thousands of young students aspire to wear the uniform, Deepak’s story shines as a beam of hope, proving that one’s beginnings do not determine one’s destiny.
Deepak was born into a modest home, where financial comfort was a luxury. His father worked long hours as a taxi driver, often taking on extra shifts to ensure his children received a good education. The family lived in a rented room in Garud. There were no coaching centres, no elite facilities, and no privileged networks. What Deepak did have, however, was unwavering family support and a dream he held close to his heart: to join the armed forces and serve the nation. Growing up in the scenic but economically modest region of Bageshwar, he learned the value of hard work early. Every achievement was earned, not given. And every challenge only strengthened his resolve.
Deepak’s early education took place at a local public school where he studied till Class 8. Even in a basic setup, his brilliance shone. His teachers often describe him as disciplined, curious, and deeply motivated. After Class 8, he secured admission to Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) Gagrigole, an institution known for nurturing talent in rural India. At JNV, Deepak thrived. He topped his district in Class 12, proving not only his academic strength but also his consistency and dedication. His success at JNV became the foundation of his dream to enter the National Defence Academy, a dream that required courage, sacrifice, and relentless preparation.
After completing school, Deepak moved to Delhi for higher education at Delhi University. Life in the capital was not easy; expenses were high, competition was intense, and balancing studies with NDA preparation required extraordinary discipline. Yet Deepak persevered. Every night spent studying, every hour of physical training, and every sacrifice moved him closer to his goal. In 2022, all the hard work paid off. He cleared the highly competitive NDA entrance exam and interview, securing a place at one of the world’s most prestigious military academies.
The National Defence Academy is known for its grueling training mentally, physically, and emotionally. Across three years, Deepak was tested through tough academic schedules, intense physical routines, leadership drills, military discipline, and rigorous endurance challenges. But he never backed down. Deepak excelled across every sphere: academics, physical fitness, leadership skills, teamwork, and overall conduct. Among hundreds of cadets from across India, he consistently ranked among the top performers. His balanced excellence, discipline, and determination set him apart, carving his path toward the academy’s highest honor.
At the 149th Passing Out Parade held this week, Deepak achieved what many only dream of: he was awarded the President’s Gold Medal, given to the best all-round cadet of the entire course. The medal was presented to him by Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, who served as the chief guest for the ceremony. As the medal was pinned to his ceremonial uniform, emotions ran high. For Deepak, it was the moment every sacrifice had led to. For his father, who drove a taxi to make ends meet, it was the culmination of years of silent struggle. For his mother, who held the home together, it was the victory of her prayers. And for Uttarakhand, it was a moment of immense pride. Deepak’s story resonates with millions because it reflects the everyday struggles and dreams of Indian families. His success is not built on privilege but on hard work. It tells every child growing up in a small town that dreams are valid. It tells every parent working tirelessly that sacrifices are never wasted. It tells every young aspirant preparing for defence exams that hard work truly pays off.
India applauds Deepak Kandpal, and we also celebrate the spirit he represents: courage, dedication, and service to the nation. Standing at the threshold of a promising military career, Deepak embodies the future of India’s armed forces: strong, humble, capable, and deeply rooted in values.
