In the crowded lanes of Pune’s Tadiwala Road slums, dreams are often small, but Chandrika Pujari dreamed big. At just 17, she scripted history by winning the gold medal in the women’s 51 kg category at the World Boxing Futures Cup 2026 in Bangkok. Against the odds, this young girl who was once told her environment could limit her, now stands as a beacon of hope. In the final, she faced Uzbekistan’s Mardonova Nazokat and triumphed with a unanimous 5–0 decision. Chandrika’s victory isn’t just about a medal; it is about resilience, courage, and the power of relentless determination to rise above circumstances.
Chandrika’s journey began at the Yuva Boxing Club, founded by Sachin Shinde to provide underprivileged children a safe space to explore sports. With parents working long hours, her father as a helper and her mother as a house cleane, Chandrika found guidance, discipline, and purpose at the club. The punching bags and training mats became her escape, her sanctuary, and eventually her ladder to success. Through countless hours of training, she learned not just boxing techniques but life lessons, discipline, focus, and the unwavering belief that her beginnings would not define her future.
Opportunities came slowly, but Chandrika’s dedication never wavered. Limited resources meant she moved from Pune to the Sports Authority of India in Goa, and later to the Army Sports Institute in Pune, training alongside India’s best young boxers. Under mentors like Jayant Shinde and alongside champions like Nikhat Zareen, she honed her skills, transforming raw talent into world-class finesse. Before Bangkok, she had already shone at the Asian Youth Games 2025 in the 54 kg category, showing the world that her spirit could not be contained. Every punch she throws carries not just her ambition, but the hopes of countless young dreamers who see themselves in her journey.
Chandrika’s story is now inspiring an entire community. Following her success, more than 20 children joined Yuva Boxing Club, eager to follow her footsteps. Parents now see sports as a path to opportunity rather than just recreation. Her eyes are set on the Youth Olympic Games 2026, but the impact of her journey transcends medals, it’s about belief, hope, and breaking the chains of circumstance. From slum streets to international arenas, Chandrika Pujari embodies the triumph of spirit over situation, proving that with courage and determination, dreams can punch their way into reality.
