In many homes across India, traditional art hangs quietly on walls, admired, photographed, and sometimes forgotten. But for Yosha Gupta, these art forms are not just decorations. They are living stories of communities, history, and identity.
Before stepping into the world of cultural entrepreneurship, Gupta spent more than fifteen years working in the global development and FinTech ecosystem, collaborating with institutions such as the World Bank Group and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Her work focused on economic systems and financial inclusion across Asia.
During this time, she encountered a reality that stayed with her: India’s traditional artisans possessed extraordinary skill, yet many of them struggled to earn stable incomes. Their art carried centuries of knowledge, but their access to markets remained limited. The problem was not talent, it was visibility, opportunity, and connection.
In 2019, Gupta launched MeMeraki, initially as a small initiative focused on sharing stories behind traditional Indian art. What began as a passion project soon evolved into a larger mission, creating a digital platform where heritage art could meet a modern audience. MeMeraki today works as a culture-tech platform that connects traditional artisans directly with art enthusiasts, learners, and collectors around the world. The idea is simple but powerful: use digital tools to bring artists and audiences closer than ever before.
The platform functions through three key pillars. First, it offers online masterclasses and live workshops where artisans themselves teach their art. For the first time, people from different parts of the world can learn directly from master practitioners of Indian folk traditions. Second, MeMeraki provides art kits and learning experiences that make traditional art accessible to beginners. And third, it operates a curated marketplace where collectors can purchase authentic handcrafted pieces created by artisans.
Turning Artisans into Global Creators
One of the most remarkable changes MeMeraki has created is the transformation in how artisans see their own work. Instead of being limited to local markets or dependent on middlemen, artists are now able to interact directly with a global audience. Many of the artisans on the platform represent centuries-old art traditions such as Gond painting, Madhubani painting, Kalamkari, and Pattachitra. Through workshops and storytelling sessions, these artists explain the cultural meaning behind every motif, color, and symbol.
For many participants attending these sessions, it is not just an art class; it is a cultural experience. By bringing artisans into the digital space, MeMeraki has helped them earn additional income while also giving them recognition as cultural educators. The platform has worked with hundreds of artists and aims to empower thousands more, ensuring that traditional knowledge continues to be practiced and valued.
As MeMeraki continued to grow, its impact began attracting attention from investors, cultural institutions, and the broader startup ecosystem. The platform has raised funding to strengthen its technology and expand its reach, while also gaining national visibility after appearing on Shark Tank India. But beyond the business milestones, the deeper achievement lies in the community it is building, a space where tradition is celebrated, artisans are respected, and learners become part of the cultural journey.
In a fast-moving digital world, where trends change overnight, MeMeraki is doing something quietly powerful. It is reminding people that tradition still matters and that with the right platform, even centuries-old art forms can find a vibrant place in the future.
