In a heartwarming display of cultural exchange, a 72-year-old French woman named Shakuntala recently wowed a crowd with her ‘arangettam’ in Koodiyattam at the Pangavu Siva Temple in Cheruthuruthy, India. Despite not knowing Malayalam or Sanskrit, Shakuntala's near 90-minute performance as Lalitha from the ‘Shoorpanakhankam’ drama was nothing short of enchanting.
Shakuntala's journey to Koodiyattam began in 2016 when she attended a workshop in Paris under the auspices of Kerala Kalamandalam, which sparked her interest in the traditional performing art form of Kerala. From there, she made regular trips to Cheruthuruthy to learn Koodiyattam under the tutelage of Dr Kalamandalam Krishnendu, attending 20 two-hour-long classes each year since 2018.
Shakuntala's background in Bharatanatyam, which she learned under the renowned V S Muthuswamy Pillai in Chennai, adds to the remarkable nature of her story. In Paris, she regularly conducts workshops as a Bharatanatyam teacher, while her husband, Francis, is a devoted supporter of her artistic passion.
Shakuntala's arangettam highlights the beauty and power of cultural exchange and the universal language of art. Koodiyattam combines ancient Sanskrit theatre with elements of Koothu, an ancient performing art from the Sangam era, and is recognised as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Shakuntala's journey shows that art has no boundaries, and the pursuit of passion and learning can lead to beautiful and unexpected experiences.
