For most athletes, breaking a national record is the highlight of a career. For Dev Meena, it is becoming a habit.
The young pole vaulter from Madhya Pradesh once again rewrote Indian athletics history at the Inter-State Athletics National Championships in Bhubaneswar, clearing 5.46 metres to set a new national record. The effort surpassed the previous mark of 5.45m, which had been jointly held by Dev and fellow vaulter Kuldeep Kumar after the Federation Cup in Ranchi just a month ago.
More importantly, the leap also helped Dev achieve the qualification standard for the upcoming Asian Games, bringing a childhood dream closer to reality.
Dev began the competition confidently, clearing the 5m mark before successfully crossing 5.20m and 5.35m. With all other competitors out of contention, he raised the bar to a record-breaking 5.46m. The first two attempts were unsuccessful. But champions often save their best for last. Carefully adjusting his run-up and waiting for the wind conditions to improve, Dev launched himself into history on his final attempt.
He later said that he changed his running position and waited for the wind to settle. He knew he could clear it if the conditions were right. The gamble paid off, and Indian athletics had a new national record.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Dev’s rise has been his friendly rivalry with fellow vaulter Kuldeep Kumar. Since the start of the year, the duo has collectively broken or equalled the national record multiple times, constantly pushing each other to greater heights.
“We both motivate each other,” Dev said. “I know Kuldeep will aim for a certain mark, and that inspires me to go higher.”
The healthy competition has sparked an unprecedented rise in Indian men's pole vault, with the national record being improved five times in less than two years.
The achievement carries extra significance because no Indian men's pole vaulter has competed at the Asian Games since the 1986 Seoul Games. Now, with Dev clearing the qualification standard and continuing to improve with every competition, Indian athletics could be on the verge of a historic breakthrough.
Next up are major international competitions, including the Commonwealth Games, where Dev and Kuldeep are expected to represent India together.
For now, though, Dev Meena stands alone at the top—quite literally higher than any Indian pole vaulter has ever gone before.
