The government's 'Make in India' mission got a thrust on Thursday as India's first locally manufactured Jeep Compass rolled out from the Ranjangaon plant in Pune. The Indian arm of the Italian- American automaker Fiat Chrysler launched the Jeep brand in India.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was present at the event when the vehicle was rolled off the assembly line. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) chief operating officer - Asia Pacific region (excluding China) Paul Alcala, and president & managing director, FCA India, Kevin Flynn were among others who were present.
With this, India has joined China, Mexico and Brazil as a manufacturing and export hub for the Jeep Compass. Alcala appreciated the government's efforts to make India a desirable manufacturing destination for multinational organizations like theirs.
He added that with the start of production and an investment of USD 280 million in Jeep Compass localization, FCA has reaffirmed its commitment to Indian consumers and its long-term presence in the country.
The Jeep Compass will begin its full production in July and three variants of the vehicle- Sport, Longitude and Limited are expected to hit the market during the third quarter of the year.
The Compass is the first model from the Jeep range to be produced in India.
