A new smartphone app has been developed that can monitor blood pressure through a person's fingertips, providing a cheap and accessible way to track cardiovascular health.
The app, called "FingerBP," was developed by researchers at the University of Toronto and is able to use the smartphone's camera to detect changes in blood flow under the skin. By placing a fingertip over the camera lens and pressing lightly, the app can measure blood pressure with a high degree of accuracy.
The app has been tested on a group of 1,328 people, and was found to be 95% accurate at detecting hypertension when compared to traditional blood pressure monitors.
The potential for FingerBP is huge, particularly in low-income areas where access to traditional blood pressure monitoring devices may be limited. By using a smartphone, which is already owned by a majority of the population, people can easily track their blood pressure and take proactive steps to improve their cardiovascular health.
Moreover, the app is also ideal for people who need to monitor their blood pressure on a regular basis, such as those with diabetes or heart disease. It provides a convenient and non-invasive way to track their condition, without the need for frequent visits to the doctor.
