In a profession dominated by men, Anu Kunjumon stands tall—both literally and figuratively—as one of Kerala’s few female bouncers. The 37-year-old security professional has protected some of the state’s biggest celebrities, including Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, during high-profile film promotions. But her journey to breaking gender stereotypes wasn’t an easy one.
Growing up with financial hardships, Anu had to take charge of her family's well-being from a young age. Providing for her mother and sister instilled in her an unshakable sense of responsibility and resilience. “I have faced challenges all my life, but I overcame everything with my mental strength,” she shared in a recent interview.
Anu’s journey into the world of security started in an unexpected way. She began her career as a photographer, covering film promotional events and celebrity gatherings. During one such event, she had an altercation with a male bouncer. That moment sparked a thought—why weren’t there more women in security roles? Instead of backing down, Anu decided to step into the field herself.
She quickly came to understand that, while discrimination wasn’t always obvious, the absence of structured training programs and the lack of female representation in the industry created significant barriers for women aspiring to enter the security field. Rather than being discouraged, Anu resolved to challenge these limitations head-on. She embarked on a journey of rigorous physical and mental training, equipping herself with the skills and resilience needed to thrive in a male-dominated profession.
Through her perseverance, she not only carved a space for herself but also demonstrated that true capability is defined by strength, skill, and dedication—not by gender.
Today, Anu works at high-energy events, from celebrity parties to packed nightclubs, ensuring safety in high-pressure environments. Her recent appearance as part of Mohanlal’s security team during the promotions of L2 Empuraan caught the public’s attention. Dressed in an all-black security outfit, her confident demeanor and authoritative presence were impossible to ignore.
Anu’s story is an inspiration for women aspiring to enter unconventional fields. With willpower, physical fitness, and mental resilience, she believes anyone can excel as a bouncer. As more female security professionals emerge, her pioneering role is helping shift perceptions in a male-dominated industry.
