Imagine struggling to find clothes that fit, feel comfortable, and allow you to move freely. According to research, 24% of people in the UK have a disability. Many of these people struggle to find clothing that is accessible and comfortable. This is the reality for three out of four people with disabilities in the UK, highlighting a critical gap in the fashion industry and the urgent need for adaptive clothing.
Primark is making fashion more inclusive with the launch of its first-ever adaptive fashion line—a collection of 49 thoughtfully designed clothing items aimed at making dressing easier for people with disabilities. Created in collaboration with Victoria Jenkins, a fashion designer who lives with a disability and is the founder of Unhidden, the line combines style with accessibility. Featuring trench coats, jeans, and shirts, the collection includes adaptive elements such as magnetic zippers, easy-to-use snap fastenings, and discreet openings for tube, stoma, or catheter access. With this initiative, Primark is taking a significant step toward making mainstream fashion more functional and inclusive for all.
The clothing line also includes options for people who use wheelchairs. For example, some of the pants have a longer back hem and a side zip that makes it easier to get dressed while seated. Primark worked with members of the disabled community to design the clothing line. The company held focus groups and "hands-on" fit sessions to make sure that the clothing was comfortable and easy to wear.
Victoria Jenkins said, "It's an incredibly proud moment to see this collection go live. Disabled people face lots of barriers in their lives, and clothing shouldn't be one of them."
The adaptive fashion line is a much-needed solution to this problem. By providing clothing that is designed specifically for people with disabilities, Primark is helping to break down barriers and make fashion more accessible. The clothing line is available in 31 Primark stores in the UK, as well as online through the company's Click & Collect service.
A Step in the Right Direction
Primark is known for offering the latest fashion trends at affordable prices. Primark's adaptive fashion line is a step in the right direction. It shows that the company is committed to making fashion accessible to everyone, regardless of their abilities.
Victoria Jenkins' words remind us that fashion should be for everyone. This launch is a promising start, but the journey towards true inclusivity is ongoing. Let's hope other brands follow suit, creating a high street where adaptive clothing is not a niche offering, but a standard
