Bengaluru witnessed the grand debut of the first-ever Kambala, a traditional slush track buffalo race hailing from coastal Karnataka, at the Palace Grounds. The weekend event wrapped up its exhilarating races on Sunday after drawing a substantial crowd, including celebrities.
Over 175 pairs of buffaloes with their adept jockeys and accompanying team members arrived from regions like Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and neighboring Kasaragod, recreating an authentic ambiance reminiscent of coastal Karnataka in Bengaluru. Notably, Bengaluru Kambala boasted the lengthiest 'kare' (slush track) stretching 155 meters, surpassing the usual 145-meter track.
This festival, steeped in the cultural heritage of coastal Karnataka, transformed the Palace Grounds into a vibrant tapestry of 'Karavali Samskruti,' drawing the attention of thousands. The Kambala, a beloved folk sport, holds a historical legacy of more than 350 years and typically runs from late November to early April, hosting events at various locations statewide.
The Bunt community diligently prepares buffalo pairs throughout the year, aiming for victory in major Kambala events. The sport gained global attention after Rishabh Shetty's film "Kantara," shining a spotlight on this tradition. Organizers ensured compliance with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, prioritizing the animals' well-being by providing adequate food, water, and necessary care.
The Bengaluru Kambala not only showcased thrilling races but also served as a cultural bridge, celebrating Karnataka's rich heritage while introducing the essence of coastal traditions to Bengaluru city.
